Yellow violet Description:

Viola pubescens , commonly known as Yellow violet, is an herbaceous perennial plant that is native to North America.  It can be found in partial to full shade woods is found east

of the Missouri River, into New England and north into central and eastern Canada.

Yellow violet grows 4 to 18 inches tall, spreading by seeds. Not as aggressive as other violets, it can be added to borders or used to added throughout woodland plantings.   It has a beautiful yellow flower with heart-shaped leaves. It is an excellent plant for woodland areas and attracts Mason bees, carpenter bees, digger bees, sweat bees, mining bees, bee flies, small butterflies and skippers, and fritallaries. Brown lines on the yellow flower petals direct the pollinators to the pollen and nectar.  Seeds of violets have an elaiosome, a protein-rich structure, attracted by ants that disperse the seeds.  Mourning doves, ruffed grouse, wild turkey and juncos eat the seeds. Leaves and stems are eaten by rabbits, chipmunks and turtles.
