Species description – Helianthus maximiliani, commonly known as Maximillian's sunflower or tall sunflower, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native to North America and can be found growing in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, prairies, and along stream banks. The yellow ray flowers attract bees, flies, butterflies and beetles. Some butterfly caterpillars eat the foliage. Seeds attract songbirds. It typically grows many flower heads.
Maximilan's sunflower can grow to a height of 2 to 10 feet depending on the site conditions. It has rough, grayish-green leaves that fold up along the center vein. The stem is rough and green or purple in color.
Maximilian's sunflower is hardy and easy to grow. It is fast growing. It prefers full to partial sun and can tolerate dry to wet soil, doing best in a mesic loam. It blooms from July to August and
Native Range:
Maximilian's sunflower is found across the state of Minnesota. More broadly, Maximillian's sunflower can be found mostly in the central United States.
