Tilia americana

Common Name: American Basswood

American Basswood is a large deciduous tree growing 60 to 110 feet tall, commonly found in rich hardwood forests throughout Minnesota. It has broad, heart-shaped leaves and fragrant pale yellow flowers in early summer that are highly attractive to bees. The tree produces small nutlets attached to a papery bract. Basswood is an excellent shade tree for parks and large landscapes, with soft wood historically used for carving and linden tea made from its flowers.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
