Canada Buffaloberry

Shepherdia canadensis

Canada Buffaloberry is a hardy deciduous shrub reaching 1 to 10 feet tall, typically found in dry, rocky soils and open woodlands, particularly in northern Minnesota. It has dark green foliage and produces small yellow flowers in early spring, followed by red berries on female plants. The berries are tart but edible and were used by Indigenous peoples for food and medicinal purposes. Its drought tolerance and nitrogen-fixing ability make it a great choice for dry restoration projects, wildlife plantings, and upland native gardens.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
