Salix petiolaris

Common Name: Slender-leaved Willow

Slender-Leaved Willow is a small to medium-sized shrub, typically growing 3 to 20 feet tall, found in wet meadows, swamps, and moist woodland edges across Minnesota. Its narrow leaves and upright habit distinguish it from other native willows. It blooms in early spring with catkins that support early-season pollinators. It only spreads by seed, unlike many of our other native Minnesota willow species. Slender-Leaved Willow is useful in wetland restoration, naturalized low spots, and as a buffer species in rain gardens or moist native landscapes.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
