Rosa arkansana

Common Name: Prairie Rose

Prairie Rose is a low-growing native rose that reaches about 1 to 3 feet in height, forming colonies via underground rhizomes. Found in dry prairies and open, sunny fields, it is widespread in southern and western Minnesota. Its fragrant pink flowers bloom in early summer and are followed by bright red hips that persist into fall. The hips are a food source for birds and mammals, and they’ve been traditionally used to make teas rich in Vitamin C. It is excellent for use in native gardens, prairie restorations, and as a pollinator-friendly groundcover on dry soils.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
