Quercus rubra

Common Name: Red Oak

Red Oak is a fast-growing, tall deciduous tree reaching 60 to 80 feet. It prefers mesic upland forests with rich, well-drained soils and is widespread across Minnesota. Its lobed leaves turn a deep red in fall, and the tree produces round acorns every other year. Red Oak is widely planted in landscapes for its form and fall color and serves as an important food source for wildlife. It is sensitive to soil compaction and urban stress, so best used in natural or park-like settings.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
