Quercus ellipsoidalis

Common Name: Northern Pin Oak

Northern Pin Oak is a medium-sized tree that grows around 80 feet tall, commonly found in dry, sandy uplands, oak barrens, and savannas across central and northern Minnesota. It has deeply lobed leaves with bristle tips and produces ellipsoid acorns that mature in two years. This oak is highly tolerant of poor, sandy soils and drought, making it valuable for dry restoration sites and sandy woodlands. Its fall foliage turns a brilliant red, adding ornamental value.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
