Prunus virginiana

Common Name: Chokecherry

Chokecherry is a large shrub or small tree, 10 to 25 feet tall, commonly found in open woods, thickets, and along roadsides. It produces long racemes of white flowers in spring and dark red to black berries later in the season. The fruits are used in jams and jellies, though they are astringent when raw. Its dense growth provides excellent cover and food for wildlife. It’s useful in windbreaks, naturalized plantings, and for erosion control.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
