Prunus serotina

Common Name: Wild Black Cherry

Wild Black Cherry is a medium to large tree, typically 50 to 100 feet tall, with a straight trunk and spreading crown. It grows in a wide range of mesic forests, edges, and old fields. Its fragrant white flower clusters bloom in late spring, followed by black fruits relished by birds. It has high value for timber, wildlife, and as a host plant for many Lepidoptera species. In landscapes, it's best suited to naturalized settings, woodland edges, or large restoration projects.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
