Picea mariana

Common Name: Black Spruce

Black Spruce is a slow-growing, narrow conifer reaching 30 to 50 feet tall. It thrives in cold bogs, peatlands, and wet coniferous forests. This species is well-adapted to acidic, nutrient-poor soils and is often associated with sphagnum moss. In landscaping, it's suited for wetland restoration or as a native evergreen in naturalized plantings, especially in northern Minnesota.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
