Betula pumila

Common Name: Bog Birch

Bog Birch is a multi-stemmed, thicket-forming shrub that grows 4 to 12 feet tall and is typically found in wetlands, fens, and sphagnum bogs. Native to northern Minnesota, it has small, rounded leaves and reddish-brown bark. It’s valuable in shoreline stabilization and wetland restoration projects. Its compact form and tolerance for poor, acidic soils make it suitable for rain gardens or naturalized wet areas.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
