Alnus viridis

Common Name: Green Alder

Green Alder is a multi-stemmed shrub typically growing 6 to 14 feet tall, found in upland and mountainous regions, particularly in northern Minnesota. It is often used in erosion control and land reclamation due to its soil-binding roots and nitrogen-fixing ability. The foliage is browsed by wildlife, and it provides important cover along forest edges and in disturbed sites.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
