Alnus incana

Common Name: Speckled Alder

Speckled Alder is a large shrub or small tree reaching 10 to 25 feet in height, often forming dense thickets along streambanks, wetlands, and lake margins. It is recognizable by its smooth, dark bark marked with light-colored lenticels. As a nitrogen-fixing plant, it improves soil fertility, making it valuable in wetland restoration and erosion control. Its dense growth provides excellent wildlife habitat and bank stabilization.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
