Prunus pensylvanica

Common Name: Pin Cherry

Pin Cherry is a small, fast-growing tree or large shrub reaching 20 to 35 feet tall. It is typically found in forest openings, burned areas, and disturbed uplands, especially in sandy soils. It produces clusters of white flowers in spring followed by bright red, tart cherries enjoyed by birds and wildlife. Though short-lived, it plays an important role in early forest succession. In landscaping, it is suitable for naturalized areas, wildlife gardens, and erosion control.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
