Onoclea sensibilis

Common Name: Sensitive Fern

Sensitive Fern is a deciduous perennial fern that grows 1-3 feet tall and spreads through rhizomes. It thrives in moist to wet woodlands, along streambanks, and in shaded wetlands. The fronds are bright green and deeply lobed, with fertile fronds turning brown in the fall. The plant gets its name from its sensitivity to frost, which causes it to wither quickly. This fern is useful in rain gardens, shaded borders, and restoration projects where soil stabilization is needed.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
