Abies balsamea

Common Name: Balsam Fir

Balsam Fir is a medium-sized evergreen tree reaching 40-75 feet in height, with a narrow, conical shape and fragrant, soft needles. It thrives in cool, moist forests, often found in northern Minnesota in mixed coniferous stands. Its dense foliage provides excellent cover and nesting sites for birds and small mammals, while also being an important food source for deer in the winter months. It is commonly used in reforestation projects, windbreaks, and as a popular Christmas tree species.

Planting Information

Dig a hole in your planting site slightly larger than the plant’s root system. When placing the plant into the hole, ensure that the soil line remains consistent with its original level in the pot. Fill in around the roots with the excavated soil, gently firming it to eliminate air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly the same day to promote successful establishment.
