Physostegia virginiana
Common Name: Obedient Plant
Obedient Plant is a tall, clump-forming perennial reaching 1 to 4 feet in height, with square stems and spikes of tubular pink to purple flowers that bloom from mid to late summer. It thrives in moist prairies, streambanks, and wet meadows, tolerating full to partial sun. The name "obedient plant" comes from the way individual flowers can be temporarily moved and stay in place. While it can spread aggressively in rich soils, it provides excellent nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This species works well in rain gardens, naturalized wetland edges, and moist pollinator gardens.
