Prairie Day 2016

It's Time for Prairie Day – Please Join Us!

Prairie Day is one of our favorite special events to host. We’re planning activities geared toward the entire family. In years past we’ve had hay rides, petting zoos, horticultural presentations, exhibits, how-to demonstrations, and guest speakers. This year will be no different. We’ve got lots of exciting things in store!

August 13, 2016
9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Our Princeton Facility: 31646 - 128th St

Some of our invited guests that will have informational displays or presentations include:

  • The Minnesota Herpetelogical Society (for those interested in amphibians and reptiles)
  • Friends of the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge
  • Sherburne County Soil & Water Conservation District
  • The Xerces Society for Insect Conservation
  • The University of Minnesota Raptor Center

We'll also have our own informational booths:

  • Woodland restoration and species recommendation
  • Shoreline, rain garden, and wetland recommendations
  • Management of pesky plants such as thistle, reed canary, and buckthorn
  • Pollinators

In our pollinator booth we’ll be sharing about plants that are good for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. We’ll also be answering questions about our Sowing It Back Together kits and other pollinator-related issues.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Karen Oberhauser, professor from the U of M Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology. Dr. Oberhauser is a conservation biologist whose special interest is monarch butterflies.

We have also invited the U of M’s own Bee Squad as well. The Bee Squad aids those in our area who are interested in promoting healthy bee populations and pollinator habitats.

With our commitment to increase pollinator habit here in Minnesota and the rest of the Midwest, we’re excited to host Dr. Oberhauser and the Bee Squad and look forward to their presentations. Representatives of the Monarch Joint Venture (a federal/state cooperative effort) will be guiding vistors through our liatris plot. Liatris, also known as blazing star, is a native prairie perennial that is a favorite of pollinators.

And don't worry, we haven’t forgotten the snacks! The Princeton Girls’ Volleyball Booster Club will be manning the concession stand as part of their fund raising drive.
