Prairie Day 2016

Prairie Restorations, Inc. would like to thank the more than 500 people who visited our Princeton farm for Prairie Day 2016! It was wonderful day and we truly appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedules to spend the day with us.

We all learned a lot about monarchs from Dr. Karen Oberhauser’s engaging speech and many of us followed her to the Meadow blazing star plot to see the adult monarchs feeding on their favorite nectar source. We also found a few volunteer milkweed plants hosting monarch caterpillars, as well as a few eggs that Karen was able to take back to the Monarch Lab to observe!

The live animals seemed to be another favorite of the day, especially the presentations by Kayla from the U of M Raptor Center. We got to see a bald eagle, kestrel, and an owl from less than 15 feet away! We watched them eat, spread their wings, and learned a lot about their behaviors. It was very fun to see the frogs, turtles and snakes at the Minnesota Herpetological Society booth as well as the farm animals brought by Walton’s Hollow Petting Zoo.

We would also like to thank the other organizations who participated in Prairie Day. The Bluebird Recovery Program booth was very informative and a lot of people left with their new standard bluebird houses. Representatives from Friends of Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge were very fun and informative -we especially enjoyed Rosebud, the skunk! The Pollinator Plinko game Sherburne County Soil and Water Conservation District brought was a great twist on the original, and Sarah from the Xerces Society brought a ton of educational literature. We learned a lot about bees and what we can do to help pollinators of all kinds at both booths!

There was delicious grilled food from the Princeton Girls’ Volleyball Booster Club and,as always, lots of entertainment from Kirby at the Big Q. The staff at Prairie Restorations, Inc. also had a wonderful time hosting hayrides, plant walks, the variety ofkid’s activities, and especially answering questions and providing information about what we do! We are all looking forward to the next Prairie Day!

Thanks again to everyone who attended and helped make Prairie Day 2016 a great success!
