Integrated Plant Management - the art of controlling unwanted species (weeds)

Weeds happen! Even in the best of families. Whenever established soils are dramatically disturbed the opportunity is ripe for awakening weed seeds that may have been dormant for years. Weeds are opportunistic; open the door and they will come.

Integrated plant management, or IPM as it is commonly known, is a blend of techniques selected from a bag of land management tools and tricks. IPM is all about timing - a strategy that selectively targets unwanted species using a variety of summertime techniques, such as chopping, spot spraying, spot mowing, hand cutting or even hand weeding.

Finding the correct medicine to cure the patient can be complex. With no specific formula, IPM must rely on professional “on the fly” judgments of experienced PRI land managers, who have been trained to adapt management practices to specific seasonal variations, site conditions and growth patterns.

Implementing IPM strategies is another example of PRI’s determination to get the job done - to maintain beautiful and enduring native plant communities on your site and throughout the region.
