There is troubling news in the world as we know it. Native plant and animal populations are declining and in at least some cases the decline is dramatic. Monarch butterflies have now become uncommon and may be at the lower limit of their critical mass - a tragedy in the making. Native bee populations, along with honey bees, have been decimated and the native plants that rely on these pollinators are undoubtedly impacted as well. Nobody knows for sure but it is our belief that these indicator species are probably just the tip of a very serious and avoidable calamity.
To help off-set these declines and others that we can only guess at, Prairie Restorations, Inc. has created a new initiative that we are calling "Sowing it Back Together". We want to rally the masses and that means you! Our goal is to motivate the conversion of 25% of the mowed turf in North America to some kind of a native plant community. If you own property, no matter what size, and some of it is mowed, whether urban, suburban or country, you can help. Evaluate what you mow and define 25% that you can change into a wildflower garden, rain garden, natural meadow or thicket. No matter how small your project is you will be contributing to a big and critical effort. You will become a part of the "Sowing it Back Together" team - A team that we hope will grow to include people from across our state, our region and even the whole of North America.
Your efforts will matter.
Four kits have been developed to accommodate your site so that you can join in this effort. With everyone doing their part, we can make a difference! Click on the links below to find the program best suited for your site…
