Summer Prairies

shore 024It’s been a great time to be out in the prairie. The recent rains and heat have really boosted growth after a few dry weeks. It was dry enough in the southwest metro that even some of the heartier forbs were wilting, but now all of the midseason flowers are coming into bloom and most of the grasses are bolting. In Chanhassen at Bluff Creek behind the high school, there is a beautiful and diverse prairie in full bloom. It transitions from a short dry prairie full of white and purple prairie clover to a large mesic prairie with lots of compass plant in bloom and it has many wetland plants along the creek such as mountain mint and joe-pye weed. Anyone in the area should take a visit.
